Families do not cause eating disorders.
Eating disorders are complex mental health issues that stem from a combination of genetic, biological, psychological, and societal factors. While family dynamics and environment do influence a person's mental well-being, it is crucial to recognize that eating disorders are not solely attributed to family dynamics. Blaming families for causing eating disorders oversimplifies the issue and detracts from the need for comprehensive, multidimensional approaches to prevention, early intervention, and treatment. Understanding the multifaceted nature of eating disorders is essential in order to provide effective support and care for those affected.
Families are the key to healing.
As a parent/caregiver you might be feeling scared and frustrated that your attempts to “fix” the problem are not working, feeling guilt and shame for not doing something sooner, and feeling scared that you might make it worse.
I work with families to help identify the ways that they can support their loved one and challenge their own beliefs in the process. Families can be a foundation for their loved ones navigating the challenging path towards healing.
